The whole 2,000 owners of a Samsung Galaxy S3, can already simply swap their existing SIM card with a special payment SIM card. These SIM cards are available for free at 19 specialized O2 Guru stores across the Czech Republic, with a pre-charged credit of 250CZK from Komercni banka; enabling users to pay for goods and services with their mobile phones.
This launch builds was organized since a long time and the success of the whole solution project carried since several years, which proved that the market was ready for this payments innovation. They haed lilited the umber at 2,000 special payment SIM cards will be available to customers for free on their Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphones from the 23 of August. Thanks to the partnership with Komercní banka, the card will be charged with 250 CZK credit so that the consumers can experience the payment technology immediately. This KB Mobile Card (Mobil Karta) can be linked to an existing KB bank account or customers can set up a new account with Komercní banka. The mobile payment application, loaded onto a Samsung Galaxy SIII NFC SIM card, is provided by Visa Europe and will be downloaded to customer’s devices for free by the O2 Guru so they can start paying with their mobile.
“Together with our partners, it is our goal to introduce the technology of mobile contactless payments as an alternative to cash payments. The mobile payments offer a high level of convenience, speed and security. For merchants, they bring the new system of client service. Today, we are presenting the way people will pay in the future. We believe that by 2020 about a half of all transactions will be done via mobile devices,” says Miloslav Kozler, the regional manager of Visa Europe for contactless and mobile projects in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
“Komerční banka has been continuously supporting innovations in payment methods. In co-operation with our partners, we are excited to be the first bank in the Czech Republic to offer our clients this revolutionary way of payment,” says Petr Polák, the Payment Manager at Komercní banka.
“The support of NFC technology in Samsung GALAXY SIII is another step towards our goal to bring a convenient and efficient cashless mobile payment solution. Today's customers, specifically Galaxy SIII users, like to use advanced technologies and features anytime and anywhere. A fast and secure contactless payment will expand the possibilities of use of their phones. And it is possible to use the new NFC technology, that corresponds both to the needs of our clients and to our corporate philosophy," says Roman Šebek, Sales and Marketing Director, Samsung Electronics Czech and Slovak.
“We are proud to be the first mobile operator to introduce the NFC payments to the Czech market. Our work, however, is not finished by launching a limited series of NFC SIM cards. This limited edition is the last step before the mass market launch of this service next year,” says Richard Walitza, NFC and Financial Service Manager at Telefónica Czech Republic, a.s.
The NFC technology in mobile phones brings not only more convenience, but also a more intuitive approach to payments. NFC Payments are simple and also more secure since the users have their devices under constant control and can set up a security level to suit their preferences. For commercial operation, assistants in O2 Guru stores were specially trained for the commercial launch of NFC payments and are ready to advise, provide tips and help customers with installation of the application. Poland : key point of mobile payment market

Poland mobile payment : an over view.
Poland’s score of 27.9 on the MasterCard Mobile Payments Readiness Index is driven primarily by high rankings in Mobile Commerce Clusters and Infrastructure. Poland scores ahead of the Index average in Mobile Commerce Clusters and Infrastructure. While Consumer Readiness trails the Index average, as in several continental European economies, mobile device penetration is high. This suggests that Polish consumers probably just need to be educated further about the utility and value that mobile payments can provide.
Merket Force :
Several partnerships in Poland have been forged among payments providers, banks, and telcos in all three types of mobile payments—P2P, POS, and m-commerce. Independent firms such as mPay S.A., SkyCash and bank BlueCash are paving the way for P2P and m-commerce payments in Poland by partnering with payment processors like MasterCard. Additionally, Intelligo, a Polish telco, and Era, a bank, initiated a pilot for POS payments in 2010. In similar fashion, ING launched a pilot with Orange in 2011. While the areas that need attention in Poland—largely centering around the business regulatory climate—are real, the lively partnership environment in Poland, which includes industry giants like ING, MasterCard and Orange, speaks to potential demand for payments functionality. Mobile phone prevalence is higher than the Index average (59 percent versus 57 percent). This sets up a possible leapfrog scenario, in which electronic payments could bypass currency, and even plastic, and move directly to mobile devices. As a conclusion :
New partnerships and a developing infrastructure are laying the groundwork for mobile payments in Poland. High mobile phone penetration and a higher-than-average Infrastructure score point to an environment that is ready when consumers see the value proposition in mobile payments. Polish consumers may just require a bit of convincing as to the value of mobile payments—in the form of consumer education and marketing—before the market ignites. liens partenaires : Liens partenaires : EMV Level 2 certification for m-POS EMV Level 2 hip and sign swiffpay certification Visa MasterCard mobile payment and m-POS Czech republic europe EMV Level 2 certification for m-POS EMV Level 2 certification for m-POS mobile payment and m-POS in Romania mobile payment and m-pos in Poland mobile payment and m-pos in Solvakia mobile payment and m-pos in Russia mobile payment and m-pos in Europe mobile payment and m-pos in Asia Security mobile payment and m-pos SwiffPay, mobile payment SwiffPay, mobile payment

Romania’s Garanti Bank Uses QR Codes for Mobile Payments

When we are speaking about wearless technologies, when we speak about mobile payments, the first thing on which we think is near-field communication. However, Garanti Bank is using QR codes for its mobile payments system in Romania.
Patterning with Seamless, a Swedish company involved in mobile payments, Garanti Bank is using mobile payment system in Romania. Even during the launching phase, large retail stores are already on board. This makes Garanti Bank the first bank or financial institution to use the SEQR mobile payment service in the country.
Seamless first launched SEQR in November 2011. SEQR uses QR codes, which are found at point of sale terminals, or printed on their receipts that a buyer scans. The buyer is then taken to a page where they can pay by confirming their purchases. The charges will be deducted from the user’s Garanti Bank account.
This will help stores and merchants bring down their costs while making it more convenient for customers to pay.
SEQR virtually eliminates long lines at the cash register and is a very secure way to pay.
Garanti Bank’s Anca Motca says that the bank is looking for ways to add value to their service for their customers by coming up with innovative solutions and products. The Seamless SEQR solution is a proof of that. Motca adds that with the SEQR, they are offering tangible benefits to everyone concerned: merchants, customers and the bank itself.
Garanti Bank has been at the forefront of banking innovations, including a more secure Internet banking service, cardless transactions at ATMs and contactless payments. Their innovations have since been replicated at other banks.
For its part, Seamless’ CEO Peter Fredell says that partnering with Garanti makes it possible for them to operate in the Romanian banking industry with a “strong and innovative” partner in Garanti Bank.

Cardholder Verification Methods - EMV Level 2

Cardholder Verification Methods
Depending on the MasterCard payment product or the country of the transaction, there are two types of cardholder verification methods (CVM): personal identification number (PIN) and signature.
In Europe, countries which are EMV L2 and Chip and sign compliance are :
- Poland, - Romania, - Czech Republic - Slovakia, - Slovenia, - Italia, - Turkei - etc ...
In certain transaction scenarios, a CVM may not be required. For example, in the processing of quick payment services (QPS) transactions and PayPass transactions below the MasterCard PayPass chargeback protection amount or Maestro PayPass ceiling limit, no signature or PIN is required.
PIN CVM
The security of the cardholder’s PIN is critical for preventing fraud, and therefore PIN entry must only be conducted on PIN-entry terminals that are certified as compliant with the Payment Card Industry PIN Transaction Security (PCI PTS) requirements. In accordance with MasterCard standards, the PCI requirements need to be met for PIN entry.
EMV offers various options for PIN verification, including online, offline plaintext and enciphered PIN. For contactless transactions, offline PIN is not supported. With the growth of mobile as a cardholder device, however, an additional option is now available: on-device cardholder verification. For additional information consult the PayPass–M/Chip Reader Card Application Interface Specification v3.0, also available as EMV Kernel C-2. These documents can be found at www.paypass.com and www.emvco.com, respectively.
To be clear, cardholder PINs must never be entered into the merchant’s mobile device unless the mobile device can be certified to the PCI PTS.
UNIQUE CHALLENGE
Currently, the keypads or touch screens on mobile devices are not capable of complying with the PCI PTS requirements. In the future, mobile device manufacturers intend to use technologies that can better secure the keypad, but these technologies are still in the early stages of development.
It is not yet known if mobile device keypads will ever be appropriate for PIN capture.
BEST PRACTICES FOR MPOS SOLUTION PROVIDERS
When considering the development of a PIN-capable MPOS solution, ensure that compliance with the PCI PTS requirements can be achieved.
BEST PRACTICES FOR MERCHANTS
Merchants must not capture cardholder PINs on their mobile devices or any other device that is not PCI PTS-compliant. Merchants interested in PIN acceptance should consult their acquirers or MPOS solution providers and consider MPOS sleeves and other external devices that are certified to the PCI PTS standard. EMV Chip Transactions - m-POS in Europe

EMV Chip Transactions
The use of magnetic stripe is still prevalent globally, and as a result, data elements such as the PAN and PIN must continue to be treated as sensitive data especially since PAN can be used to facilitate card-not-present fraud. In the future, as EMV becomes ubiquitous globally, the sensitivity of these data elements may decrease. However, EMV migrations are still ongoing in various markets around the world, and the use of magnetic stripe will continue for years to come. The core requirements for EMV terminals and acquirer host processing of chip transactions are contained in the MasterCard M/Chip Requirements, downloadable by MasterCard customers from MasterCard Online www.mastercardonline.com.
UNIQUE CHALLENGE
Due to open architecture and remote nature of mobile devices, there are important considerations to be made concerning transaction authorization, card authentication, transaction performance, and the security of the payment system public keys. BEST PRACTICES FOR MPOS SOLUTION PROVIDERS
The EMV level 2 kernel can be located on the mobile device, on the remote server, or split between both. Depending on the architecture, the location or locations chosen may negatively affect performance. MPOS solution providers should ensure that the architecture of their EMV solutions maintain transaction performance, and do not introduce significant latency, and therefore create a poor cardholder and merchant experience. MPOS solutions should be configured for online-only authorization. This affords the issuer better fraud management protection in this new acceptance environment. In instances wherethere is no available network connection, transactions should not be authorized offline. As all transactions will be authorized online, the issuer will perform online card authentication method (CAM). MPOS solutions that support PayPass M/Chip must support the offline card authentication method (CAM) as per PayPass rules and requirements. Offline CAM may be performed at the remote server, the mobile device, or both however the transaction performance must be maintained. If the mobile device is not capable of maintaining the integrity of the payment system public keys, then offline CAM cannot be supported on the mobile device. The MPOS solution provider must ensure that bogus keys cannot be inserted with malicious intent, and therefore MPOS solution providers should consider designs where the server verifies that the keys are correctly stored on the MPOS card reader accessory or the mobile device on a periodic basis.
BEST PRACTICES FOR MERCHANTS
When accepting EMV chip transactions, merchants are advised to only use MPOS solutions that have been approved by EMVCo (EMV Type Approval) and the MasterCard Terminal Integration Process (M-TIP). SwiffPay Certification : EMV L2 / Study on m-POS market

DID YOU KNOW?
1.2 million MPOS solutions were shipped to MasterCard merchants in 2010 and 2011–and 75% of those merchants had not previously accepted payment card transactions.1
Mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous around the world. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU, 2011), the global mobile phone market grew by 45 percent year over year from 2006 to 2011, with 5.9 billion subscriptions globally. Smart phones are widely expected to have a significant impact on the electronic payment industry because they fill an immediate and strong need to move everyday transactions from cumbersome cash to cards and other forms of electronic payments.
SMALL BUSINESSES AND RETAILERS ARE TURNING TO MOBILE TO INCREASE SALES AND BROADEN THEIR CUSTOMER BASE
Small businesses and retailers that have never accepted card payments and previously operated on a cash- and invoice-only basis are turning to mobile point-of-sale (MPOS) solutions to expand their customer base and sales. Existing retailers are also adopting MPOS solutions to enhance the retail and payment experience. MasterCard has introduced the MasterCard Mobile POS Program to promote simple and secure transactions when consumers use their debit, credit and prepaid cards to pay merchants that use these devices.
THE MASTERCARD MOBILE POS PROGRAM
The MasterCard Mobile POS Program offers guidance and best practices to mobile point-of-sale solution providers and merchants to help small businesses and retailers use their mobile devices as secure POS payment terminals.
The program provides clarity as to how MPOS solutions should be developed and deployed by establishing MasterCard Mobile POS Best Practices.

SwiffPay Announces EMV L2 Certification for Mobile Payments Platform

White-label mobile commerce solution changes future for bank mobile payment strategies

SINGAPORE, Oct. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Swiff, the global innovator of secure mobile commerce solutions, today announced that its mobile point of sale (mPOS) platform has been certified as EMV Level 2 compliant; the "gold standard" in card payment security certification. This sets the stage for banks and their merchant customers to introduce new retail experiences, with secure payments on the go.
Payment systems that comply with the EMV standard - commonly known as chip & pin - promise improved security and address industry-wide concerns about fraud detection and prevention. And merchants who use EMV compliant chip-enabled equipment and processes enjoy lower interchange fees on transactions. EMVCo - jointly owned by Visa, MasterCard, American Express and JCB - administers the testing and approval process for confirming compliance with the EMV standard. The Swiff platform has also achieved PCI DSS Level 1, the highest standard of secure payments processing certification from the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council.
"We designed Swiff from the ground up, with the express intention of positioning banks, and their merchant customers, at the heart of a secure m-Commerce revolution," say Jerome Cle, CEO and Founder of SCCP Group. "We're already moving towards a cashless world but security must be at the heart of all payment process innovation. This is why we are thrilled to join the elite club of mobile payment technology providers to have been awarded EMV Level 2 certification."
Commenting on the business impact for Swiff, Erik Host-Roness, Executive Vice-President of SCCP Group says, "The announcement of our EMV certification has released massive pent-up demand for the Swiff platform at banks in Asia and beyond because they recognise that better payment experiences can boost loyalty and incremental revenue. Consumers and merchants everywhere can now confidently embrace new, highly secure, and low-cost ways to pay and get paid."
Several countries in the Asia-Pacific region - including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines - have already completed the transition to chip-enabled debit and credit card acceptance. "As a global payment technology company that continuously strives to enable fast, secure and reliable digital currency for consumers, Visa welcomes innovative technologies that grow the cashless payment acceptance footprint, and security standards that help keep the payment ecosystem secure," said Mr. Wei-Han Kim, Head of Payment Acceptance, Southeast Asia & Australia/New Zealand for Visa International. "This is especially true when supported by EMVCo certification, which will help drive more secure card transactions in the region, a measure which is important in helping keep payment fraud levels at historic lows."

SCCP Eyes Mobile Banking Solution Market : m-POS

MANILA, Philippines — SCCP Group, the global innovator of secure mobile commerce solutions, is planning to launch its end to end solutions in the Philippine banking sector as a follow-up to its successful launch in Thailand. Jerome Cle, CEO and Co-Founder of SCCP Group, revealed this as he cited Asia as the site for the world’s first complete live implementation of an end-to-end, secure mobile point of sale (mPOS) solution provided by Swiff platform. The partnership between the Swiff platform and Thailand’s leading consumer finance bank, Bank of Ayudhya (BAY), will allow the latter to provide its customers with new retail opportunities made possible by the flexibility and low cost of Mobile POS. Swiff is also looking at bank partnerships to be developed in growth markets in the Asia Pacific like the Philippines whose banks employ some of the most sophisticated technology in electronic banking. “This is an exciting time for the payment industry, with technology being the bedrock for enhanced mobility, payments, convenience and productivity improvements. Clients of banks in Asia including the Philippines stand to benefit from the flexibility and convenience of the mPOS solution,” said Cle. “We’re ready to empower banks worldwide with technologies that enable truly secure mobile solutions that supports acquisition and retention of customers, allowing them to stay competitive in the m-commerce revolution,” added Cle. Unlike other mobile payment companies, Swiff is not a payment aggregator and is a technology provider and partner to the banking and financial industry. Through Swiff’s innovative and unique technology, banks have the tools to roll out mobile strategies that enable bank-level secured, authenticated transactions. Swiff’s mobile platform is embedded with a Multi-Factor Authentication application that has the ability to track the mobile device, the staff who authorised the transaction, and identify the location where the payment was transacted. This enables the quick identification of any possible fraudulent use of the credit card, and promises an extremely high level of security for safe and secure card transactions. “Our strongest differentiator lies in our ability to seamlessly integrate into any acquiring bank, allowing the bank to rapidly provide an mPOS service to existing and new merchants. On the commercial front, we are opening doors for banks to achieve a richer level of engagement with their customers. Increasingly, people are changing their payment habits and are more willing to use cashless systems through mobile devices to do banking, money transfer, and commerce activities,” said Executive Vice-President of SCCP Group. SCCP Payment Services Holdings is a leading innovator in secured payment technologies worldwide. Visa, MasterCard sign European mobile payment partnerships

Last week both Visa and MasterCard announced European mobile payments partnerships. On Monday, MasterCard announced that it has entered into a mobile payments partnership with Deutsche Telekom, while Visa announced on Friday that it had joined forces with Telefonica Digital to offer a similar service.
The agreement between Visa (San Francisco, Calif., USA) and Telefonica Digital (Madrid) will see both companies co-invest in the development of products and services in areas such as mobile wallet, contactless payments (NFC), acquirer services for mobile point of sale, and merchant offers. The agreement builds on Telefónica and Visa Europe's existing relationship in markets such as the UK and Ireland, formalizing it at a Europe-wide level and establishing Visa Europe as Telefónica's preferred partner for the issuance of branded payments cards and the development of related mobile payment services, says both companies.
“Visa has been an important partner for a number of years in Europe, helping us to trial, test and ultimately launch mobile payments products,” said Joaquin Mata, director of Financial Services at Telefónica Digital. “This market has enormous untapped potential and through this partnership with Visa Europe we aim to unlock significant new business opportunities.”
According to the companies, Telefónica is committed to striking wide-ranging, open partnerships with a range of companies in order to develop mobile commerce services. In addition to Visa Europe, it has recently formed partnerships with Sybase and Giesecke and Devrient.
The agreement between MasterCard (Purchase, N.Y., USA) and Deutsche Telekom (Bonn, Germany) involves Deutsche Telekom delivering smart payments to its 93 million mobile customers across Europe.
The initial deployments will begin in Poland and Germany and will include the introduction of a mobile wallet service in 2013. The platform will be open to other issuing banks and partners, according to the Wall Street Journal, and MasterCard products will be issued through Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary ClickandBuy.
According to MasterCard’s Mobile Payments Readiness Index, which was released in May, both Poland and Germany were in the lower half of countries considered “ready” to adopt mobile payments. The scores were based on six different components: environment, infrastructure, regulation, consumer readiness, financial services and mobile commerce clusters.
According to MasterCard, Germany has a strong environment, regulatory structure, and widely distributed and affordable financial services; but the country falls short when it comes to levels of investment in telecom, as well as consumer readiness.
Although Poland is ranked in the bottom ten in terms of readiness, the index suggests that the problem has more to do with education rather than economics or penetration. According to the Index, partnerships between telcos and banks in Poland are already beginning to take shape.

Swiff debuts mobile point of sale technologies in Thailand in push towards a cashless world

World's first white label mobile commerce solution launched with Bank of Ayudhya to be real game changer for the future of mobile payments
Swiff, the global innovator of secure mobile commerce solutions, today announced the world's first complete live implementation of an end-to-end, secure mobile point of sale (mPOS) solution.
The partnership with Thailand's leading consumer finance bank, Bank of Ayudhya (BAY) and the Swiff platform will allow the bank to provide their customers with new retail opportunities made possible by the flexibility and low cost of Mobile POS.
"This is an exciting time for the payment industry, with technology being the bedrock for enhanced mobility, payments, convenience and productivity improvements," said Jerome Cle, CEO and Founder of SCCP Group. "We're ready to empower banks worldwide withtechnologies that enable truly secure mobile strategies, allowing them to stay competitive in the m-commerce revolution and take back market share from aggregators in that market."
Unlike other mobile payment companies, Swiff is not a payment aggregator and is a technology provider and partner to the banking and financial industry. Through Swiff's innovative and unique technology, banks have the tools to roll out mobile strategies that enable bank-level secured, authenticated transactions. Swiff's mobile platform is embedded with a Multi-Factor Authentication application that has the ability to track the mobile device, the staff who authorised the transaction, and identify the location where the payment was transacted. This enables the quick identification of any possible fraudulent use of the credit card, and promises an extremely high level of security for safe and secure card transactions.
"Our strongest differentiator lies in our ability to seamlessly integrate into any acquiring bank, allowing the bank to rapidly provide an mPOS service to existing and new merchants. On the commercial front, we are opening doors for banks to achieve a richer level of engagement with their customers. Increasingly, people are changing their payment habits and are more willing to use cashless systems through mobile devices to do banking, money transfer, and commerce activities," said Erik Holst-Roness, Executive Vice-President of SCCP Group.
Philip Tan, Head of E-Business of Bank of Ayudhya said, "Swiff is a strong component ofour mobile strategy in the payment chain, especially with its bank-level authentication and identification technologies which enable easy and secure payment transactions. Through this partnership, we now have a new way to engage with our customers, allowing us to grow and build customer relationships and provide a service that can help our customers become increasingly mobile in their payment processes."
Swiff was first launched by SCCP Group in Singapore since March 2012 and plans are underway for further bank partnerships to be developed in growth markets for the US, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Russia : Why Mobile Payments Are Taking Off ?

If you want to get a sense of what the technological future has in store, it often makes sense to take a look at what’s occurring in the developing world. Too poor to keep up with the last several generations of investment, markets such as BRIC countriesBrazil, China, India and Russia are often just getting around to providing many services that richer markets take for granted—and they are skipping ahead to the latest technological developments.
That dynamic appears to be at work in the financial services industry in Russia, where 95% of people lack credit cards and other banking services, according to Frederic Vanoosthuyze, vice president of information technology at MTS, the Russian telecommunications company. In place of those basic financial services, Russians are rushing ahead in the deployment of mobile payments, a technology that has been slow to take off in the U.S., as CIO Journal’s Clint Boulton reported.
“Mobile payments are growing and have huge potential in Russia given the fact that there are few credit cards,” Vanoosthuyze says. Russia is largely a cash economy. Vanoosthuyze notes that there are only 0.1 credit cards issued per person in Russia, just one third the rate in China. Thus the opening for mobile payments.
And as mobile payments enter the mainstream, they will extend financial services to millions of people, as Irving Wladawsky-Berger notes. “In developing economies, mobile digital money could be the ticket to financial inclusiveness and a higher standard of living for billions of people around the world, Wladawsky-Berger wrote in CIO Journal in August. “CIOs and other leaders need to make sure that they are prepared at various levels—from infrastructure to strategy and customer service—for those global differences.”
Russia does have a relatively widespread adoption of smartphones—which exists, in part, because the development of fixed line communications lagged the West for many years. Now one leapfrog technology—the smartphone—is making way for another. “Smartphones gives us a better platform for making financial products like mobile payments a part of people’s lives,” Vanoosthuyze told CIO Journal. Smartphone adoption is still in the single digits in Russia—not particularly high, but still much more widespread than credit cards. Vanoosthuyze says the total mobile payments market in Russia will hit 40 billion rubles ($1.2 billion) this year and triple to 163 billion rubles by 2017.
MTS—which is part of Russian investment firm Sistema and has about $12 billion in annual revenue—has been using the IT infrastructure that supports its telecom business to build a broader mobile payments service allowing its customers to use their mobile phones to pay a variety of bills. The company already has payment histories for millions of customers, which allows it to qualify them for its nascent banking services. That is a big deal in a country where credit scoring services, a key part of the financial infrastructure, have been lacking as well. “The absence of databases for credit also gives us an advantage in scoring people and distributing to our customers financial products,” Vanoosthuyze says.
As CIO Journal reported last week, he has been upgrading MTS’s IT infrastructure to enable the expansion of the mobile phone company into fixed line communications, pay TV, and now financial services.
Since 2010, he says, MTS has used its Easy Payment application to allow customers to transfer money to other accounts, and make so-called “community payments” for utilities such as water, heat, and electricity. The Easy Payment application handles about 125 million rubles a month worth of commerce, and total MTS mobile commerce is 500 million rubles a month. Vanoosthuyze says the total mobile payments market in Russia will hit 40 billion rubles this year and triple to 163 billion rubles by 2017.
Since 2011, MTS has offered a service called MTS Dengi (Russian for money), which allows any smartphone to be used as a mobile payment device. The service includes a near-field communications chip and a credit card. NFC services allow machine-to-machine communications over very short distances—such as the space between a customer and a cash register. They have been slow to take off in the U.S., however, as CIO Journal’s Boulton notes, for a variety of reasons. NFC hasn’t been built into the latest phones, such as the iPhone 5. And merchants haven’t invested in the technology, either
MTS has built a high level of security into the Dengi service, placing it in the phone’s SIM card. Vanoosthuyze says that’s more secure than a smartphone app.
MTS is only part of a wider mobile payments infrastructure in Russia. Two companies—Q/WI and Chronopay—operate so-called “corner terminals,” booths that can be found in shopping malls, underpasses and transportation stations. These machines accept cash for a range of bills, such as utilities or pay TV services, and then wirelessly transmit the credit to the user’s account, according to Vanoosthuyzse. Many ATMs provide a similar service, he said.
As Wladawsky-Berger notes, the arrival of digital mobile payments on a global scale will be as transformative as the rise of the credit card business was in the 1950s. And much of that change is beginning now, in Russia and other developing markets.

RUSSIA : Mobile payments already may beat 500 million business

With no iPhone 5 support and multiple competing variants, mobile payments may be having an evolutionary emergence toward what many expect will be a revolutionary disruption.
But, already, NFC helped process 4.5 billion rubles’ worth ($138 million) of mobile payments in Russia in the first six months of the year, according to one facilitator, I-Free.
The company projects that rising to between 15 billion ($460 million) and 18 billion rubles ($553 million) by year’s end, and up to 35 billion rubles ($1 billion) through 2013.
But I-Free’s Svetlana Kostochka tells Digit.ru even this growth is being held back by lack of NFC-enabled smartphones.
“Equipment manufacturers are in no hurry to offer devices with NFC, because they do not believe they will be in demand because of the few services. As a result, the market is not growing as fast as it could.”
US NFC payments were forecast to hit $1.1 billion in 2012 by In-Stat. Either Russia is way ahead of the US in mobile payments, or something isn’t lining up between that forecast and I-Free’s numbers. The difference may be that “NFC payments” is not confined to “mobile payments”.
East-West News: “The world’s largest payment systems, including Visa and MasterCard, are providing incentives to their Russian partners to adopt NFC through their proprietary payWave and PayPass platforms.
“Eleven sizable Russian banks already issue plastic cards with an NFC module, MasterCard says, adding that ‘a few thousand’ POS’s supporting NFC technology have been installed at Russian mobile outlets, cafés, malls, gas stations, and transportation systems, predominantly in Moscow and St. Petersburg.”
